The town of Berthoud, Colorado began as a simple depot stop after the Colorado Railroad constructed a line between Longmont and Cheyenne. Named for the surveyor of the line, Edward Berthoud, the town sprung up around the business of the railroad. Along with its growth as a railroad town, Berthoud’s farmers found success with crops like alfalfa, wheat, sugar beets, barley and corn. Sheep and cattle ranches were established with abundant grain resources. By 1900, Berthoud had become a bustling town with multiple stores, a newspaper, a grain elevator, a bank and more.
Since its early days as a railroad town and agricultural community, Berthoud has maintained its friendly, small town charm. Berthoud’s population has grown from just a couple hundred to just over 5,000 and is a wonderful place to call home.
